Notes

Notes for >ADOLPH VON DER BURG:
Adolph I Von Der Burg, Merchant Prince, 1078-1152, built Schloss-Burg Castle, which is a state-owned historical site near Solingen and Deutschlandsberg, married Adelheid, daughter of Count Dietrich of Cleve. Their son Adolph II 1100-1165 was a soldier inthe Crusades and owned Schloss-Burg Castle which overlooks the Wupper River. He married the sister of Archbishop Frederick of Cologne. Several generations (6-7) of Von Der Burg's are unclear. Adolph Von Der Burg b. 1400 d. 1470 in Cologne known as The Merchant Prince, followed by John Von Der Berg 1556 Officer of the Imperial Bodyguard. Exactly who the father of our Adolph Von Der Burg b. 1675 is unclear but the following line is that of Adolph Von Der Burg, The Merchant Prince.

The three sons (of Adolph Von Der Burg b. 1675 and Princess Elizabeth of Berg) all fled to America in 1738. These three Von Der Burg's are the founders of most of the American Funderburk/Funderburg families. Elizabeth was the half sister of Charles Phillip, Duke of Berg who had succeeded his brother Jan Wellem in 1716 to the Ducal Crown. Charles Phillip had no son to succeed him and his oldest daughter Sophia died in 1728 thus leaving him with only Sophia's sons as possible successors. Charles sister Elizabeth Von Der Burg had three sons, the eldest being John Michael who would have the strongest claim to the Ducal Crown. Elizabeth's husband Adolph of the house of Burg was also a distant relative. Duke Charles Phillipp was a Catholic while Adolph and Elizabeth and sons were Dompelaers ( German Brethern). Duke Phillipp had already imprisoned some Dompelaers and intendedto use religious persecution against the non-catholic Von Burg's to try to kill their claim to his position as Duke of Berg. Adolph's son Peter, being secondin line to John Michael and thus not eligible for title, left and went to Holland and then to Philadelphia as did his other brother Walter. John Michael remained in Germany after his brothers Peter and Walter had fled to America. He married (probably in the Royal House of Saxony) and had seven sons. John Michael was in line to succeed Charles Phillippe upon Charles' death, thus the Crown Prince. The John Michael Von Berg family all fled to America to avoid being killedor imprisoned by Duke Charles Phillipp. "Von Der Burg" means "from the mountain" and the ancestral tribe originates in the highlands east of the lower RhineRiver in Germany. The area of valleys between the Ruhr and Sieg Rivers is known as Bergischer Land and the Frank and Saxon tribes lived here..

BIOGRAPHY: A lot of information can be found in the book "Castles and Conquests"
BIOGRAPHY: The Name "Von Der Burg" means "From The Castle"
BIOGRAPHY: The family is from the Castle "Schloss Burg" on the Wupper meaning "Palace Castle"
BIOGRAPHY: This is the home of the Funderburg's/ Von Der Burg families for centuries
BIOGRAPHY: Adolph von der Burg was born about 1675 in Germany. He was the father of the three brothers, Johann, Peter and Walther, who came to America in 1738. He was a descendant of the parents of Adolph von der Burg, the Merchant Prince who moved his dwelling to the Rhine before 1430, and died in Cologne in 1470. The parents of the Merchant Prince (it is known) lived and died at Burg an der Wupper, which lies at the base of the high plateau on which the Castle Schloss Burg is located.
Adolph von der Burg, the father of the three brothers who came to America, was also about a nineteenth generation descendant of Adolph von Berg, who was born in 1020, the first ruler of the Bergisch Land.
BIOGRAPHY: One hundred years after the family rift in the House of Berg, which exploded into the Thirty Years War Charles Philipp, was Duke of Berg. He had succeeded his brother Jan Wellem in 1716, but he had no son to succeed him. When his oldest daughter, Sophia, died in 1728 the Ducal Crown was growing dim for his line. Sophia had left three minor sons, but Charles' sister Elizabeth (wife of Adolph) had three sons with a likely stronger claim for the Ducal Crown. Elizabeth was a half sister to CharlesPhillipp. She married a distant relative, ADOLPH VON DER BURG, of the old line House of Berg.
Available evidence indicates that Adolph and Elizabeth and their sons (and doubtless daughters) belonged to the Dompelaers (German Brethren). Duke Charles Phillipp, a Catholic, had already imprisoned some member of this faith and others so persecuted thatthey fled to America, to Pennsylvania. When the three boys reached maturity they constituted a triple threat to Charles Phillipp, religion, property, and throne.
Adolph and Elizabeth may have moved from Berg into Hesse for safety while their sons were yet boys, but they knew their rightful heritage and so taught their sons. When the two oldest reached maturity, Peter, being the second, who knew that he would not receive the Ducal Crown even if the family were successful in their claims, went to Holland (probably among kin) and from there to Ireland where he married. John remained in the homeland and married (probably in the Royal House of Saxony). He married about1720 and had 7 sons. After his cousin Sophia, who died in 1728, he would have been the next in line for the Ducal Crown, but it would not be available until the death of Charles Phillipp.
Eventually, due to threats from Charles Phillipp, the brothers (and probably sisters) and their families came up with a plan to move themselves out of Charles Phillipp's reach in the New World.
The Atlantic voyage in those days was fraught with indescribable hardship and danger. Conditions were crowded and otherwise uncomfortable. Sanitation was bad. Even food and water sometimes brought on sickness. Many people died and were buried a sea. Violent storms were a constant threat on the high seas, and often took their toll in shipwrecks. Consequently, distribution of the family onto two or more ships was wise.
The family did sail on two, or possibly "three ships". They were headed for Philadelphia, PA. "The Golden Beaver", "The Thistle" and possibly one other. "The Golden Beaver" on which John's family traveled was wrecked off the Carolina coast. The only survivor was Hans DeVauld Funderburk, son of John Michael. A ship carrying German immigrants rescued him.
